Cottage Close By 40 years ago we bought a cottage on Lauderdale Lakes. It’s a small chain of lakes North of Elkhorn with crystal clear water that is great boating and fishing. Today most of the new homes are bigger and much more expensive. However there are still a fair amount of cottages. We have a Cottage for sale. This cottage sits on 50 feet of Lauderdale on a very nice little bay off the main lake. There are just 15 homes on this cove, most are larger homes, but still some small cottages. 20 years ago we sold our cottage and bought a home on the lake. This is a very normal occurrence on Lauderdale, many folks buy small to get onto the Lakes and then upgrade when the opportunity comes along. Also we sold the cottage for many times what I paid for it, so we could afford the bigger place. Given the alternatives, Lake Property is a great investment. Today we have another cottage for sale that is in the family, it’s next door to our original cottage on the same cove. It’s been there a long time and some say should be torn down and replaced with a bigger home. That’s just one option. Another might be to buy it and use it as is. Sure it’s old and needs work but you’re young and handy and more importantly willing to do with less just to get on the Lakes. The nicer home can come later. In the meantime you have all the use of the Lakes you want, just like the folks with the big home and mortgage. Most of the folks with property on Lauderdale live in Illinois, a fine State with an iffy football team. But at one time the majority of people with Lauderdale property lived in Walworth and Rock Counties. These people not only used the Lakes on weekends but also during the week since it was so close to home. You can too! After work you pack up the kids for a short ride to your cottage for a boat ride, a picnic dinner on the boat, (or at the Landings) and maybe a little fishing. The kids will definitely fall asleep on the way home. Next time you can do some after dinner skiing when you will get the feeling that you own the whole lake since there are so few boats on the Lakes during the week. Then every once in a while you take tomorrow off, go to the lake tonight and you feel like you’re getting two weekends in one week. And there is vacation. You take one every year, it costs money. After you own a cottage you’ll have some of the best vacations ever without the bills to pay afterwards.
