Connected to the mainland by bridge, Westport Island is one of Maine's hidden coastal gems with eagles, osprey, great blue heron and fabulous water activities for everyone to enjoy like sea kayaking, swimming, fishing and boating to open ocean. Cruise or sail north to Wiscasset's town landing for lunch at world famous Red's Eats or shopping along the main street. Cruise south to the open ocean to explore Boothbay Harbor or the Calendar Islands of Casco Bay. In the beginning, the island was known as Jeremisquam, a nickname islanders still use for it today. The ''Indian Wars'' around 1668, resulted in abandonment of settlements, and it was not until the 1700's that the first permanent settlers took root. The island is very peaceful today, residents of the island are friendly and with a population of only 719 according to the 2020 census, you certainly won't feel crowded.
