The area of Valle Crucis is located in North Carolina's first rural historic district. Home to the Mast General Store and Mast General Store Annex, buildings erected in 1882 and 1909, respectively, and which have served this community continuously since that time, Valle Crucis was named due to three rivers flowing into each other and which resemble a cross. The town's name literally means 'vale of the cross'. Today, Valle Crucis is noted as a quiet valley town with contributions to the arts, horse farms, parks and bed and breakfast establishments, which are very popular, as well as many fine homes that are sought out in this very desirable residential area.
