Trails in this area are widely used for hiking, atving, snowmobiling, horse trail riding, and bicycling. Other recreational hobbies available in this area are hunting, and fishing in the many cold-water streams and lakes. Washington County is noted for its trout, salmon, bass, pickerel, and white perch. Tournaments for fishing are summer activities around the county as well as ice fishing in the winter months. If you are finding yourself idle many offerings are available at local schools, the University of Maine, Machaic, movies at the train station in Machias, and classes from painting to metalwork. Many cottage industries dot the community with handmade and crafted items. Food is available at the famous Helen's Restaurant noted for its strawberry pie, and gigantic donuts are offered on Sunday at the Bluebird Restaurant. Several eateries host pizza, subs, take out and anything your tummy desires. The town of East Machias has its' own governance. The town office is located in the Mary C Burns school which closed in recent years. A volunteer fire department is always at the ready an do numerous trainings to keep up with new technologies and procedures.
