    What's special

Luxuriously minimalist in design, the stunning modern seaside retreat at 38 Ocean Course Drive was designed by architect James Choate of Surber Barber Choate + Hertlein of Atlanta and beautifully constructed by master builder Russ Cooper & Associates.   With interiors designed by the renowned Nancy Braithwaite, author of Simplicity (which Veranda magazine called "required fall reading") and landscapes by acclaimed designer Sheila Wertimer, this striking home stands tall to capture sweeping views of the Atlantic and The Ocean Course's 17th and 18th holes.   Approaching the home, with its three 49-foot vertical gabled pavilions, walls of vertically grained Western Cedar and concrete, lead-coated copper roof, and rough-hewn stone-slab steps leading to the entry, there's a sense of a highly livable museum of modern art... a sense that carries through the dramatic pivoting glass-and-steel front door. Like other elements in the home, its heft and scale impresses at 5 feet wide by 11 feet high.  The door opens to a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows across a wide entry hall; on the other side lies a tranquil pool of rippling saltwater reaching out toward the sea from beneath a covered porch. The large, natural-finish Black Mountain stone--composed of mineral quartz and sandstone and imported from a quarry in India--that covers the floor of the foyer also graces the pool deck and pool.  This covered porch is one of several indoor/outdoor living spaces connecting the home's two wings, inviting residents and guests to take in the salty scent of the ocean breeze and lovely views of the seaside to the rear and tidal marsh to the front, where ducks and egrets are frequent visitors. A grand, 125-year-old live oak forms the centerpiece of the front lawn.  ENJOY "Every element should strive to be simple and powerful without compromise, and every room must have a level of power that comes from commanding scale, repetition of elements, subtleties of color, or the sheer beauty of forms," wrote Braithwaite, who designed the home as her own family's vacation retreat.  The statement describes the interiors perfectly. With clean lines, soaring ceilings, a striking and yet soothing monochromatic color scheme, and floor-to-ceiling Weru® windows framing breathtaking views from every room, the home is infused with thoughtful design and superior quality in every aspect.   Designed with private spaces for up to three families and large shared spaces for entertaining, the home's clean lines and custom, overscale furniture are enhanced by artwork--from sweetgrass baskets by a renowned sweetgrass basket maker Mary Jackson to whimsical sculptural pieces by globally acclaimed artists--and fine details including Dornbracht® faucets and innovative metal lighting fixtures by Kevin Reilly. EXPLORE From the entry, stride down the striking, 33-foot-long sisal rug--mirrored in a custom wall painted treatment at the hallway's two ends--to two en suite guest bedrooms. Enter and you'll find wide-plank mahogany flooring and windows and ceilings soaring ten feet overhead. Hidden behind clean white sliding wall panels, the bathrooms offer limestone floors and walls, spacious rainshowers, and tall windows framing green treetops. One bathroom features a partially sunken tub.   On the opposite side of the entry, you'll find two additional en suite guest bedrooms, each with similarly soothing design details and soaring ceilings and windows. Take the Elevette® HydraRide elevator to the second floor, or ascend the stairway with its airy open risers, flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows with dramatic views of the Atlantic and The Ocean Course.  At the top, the great room lies to your left, extending 47 feet in width, its white-beamed vaulted ceiling soaring 24 feet into the air. Its interior focal point is the central dining room's massive wood-burning fireplace with stone-slab surround and seating ledge, but the vast ocean view, framed by a window wall extending up to the peak of the vaulted ceiling, takes the breath away.   On the opposite side, the kitchen with its window wall overlooking the marsh is equally stunning. The enormous island's black honed granite countertop features two prep sinks with Viking® disposals, and the professional-grade, stainless steel kitchen appliances and chef's work areas, hidden behind smoothly sliding, white wall panels 11 feet in height, are mirrored on either side of the room in a unique, highly functional "double kitchen" design.   Included are Wolf® five-burner gas ranges with ovens, separate Wolf wall ovens and microwaves, large Sub Zero® refrigerators and freezers with icemakers, and Miele® dishwashers. Ample clutter-free storage is hidden away as well.   On your way to the master suite, you'll go by two covered porches framed by snowy curtains puddling on the stone floor, each wide porch enhanced by ipe wood decking and airy, bronze custom-designed rails that do not obstruct the views. Zen in feeling, the rear porch will inspire you to take your meals overlooking the ocean in the open air.   Past a large powder room with a vanity and mirror of custom lacquered wood lies the tall, airy master bedroom with its soaring, white-beamed vaulted ceiling mirroring that of the great room. Its window wall overlooks the ocean, while those in the his-and-her master baths overlook the ocean and the lush landscape respectively. There, large Black Mountain stone from India on the floors and walls contrast with smooth white fixtures, including a deep, freestanding tub, thick white lacquered-wood countertops, a snowy white vessel sink, and sleek white closet doors concealing plentiful storage space.   Every detail has been thoughtfully designed, from the white terrycloth window treatments to the large window overlooking the treetops in the rainshower.  Also in the master suite is a separate home office; its tall window wall overlooks the grand live oak, massed ferns, and tranquil marsh across the lane.  "When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe," John Muir, founder of The Sierra Club, once said. This is a home hitched to everything else in the universe.  EXTRAS Additional features of this home include a spacious laundry room with tall cabinets and front-loading Whirlpool® washer and dryer; a side-entry, three car garage; geothermal heating and air conditioning; and sound, security, and irrigation systems. The home's custom furnishings may be purchased separately. A Kiawah Island Club Golf Membership is also available with the purchase of this property.
