Neighborhood Description The early beginnings of the Granite Community occurred soon after the Mormon Pioneers came into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. They found an excellent stand of timber up Little Cottonwood Canyon. Several sawmills were erected in the canyon in the early 1850's to take advantage of the timber. Many of the early homes and other buildings in the valley were built from this timber. In 1859, a stone quarry was established at the mouth of the canyon on the north side of the creek to provide granite for the construction of the Salt Lake Temple. (This same quarry also provided granite stone for the Utah State Capitol.) A town site was located not far from the quarry. The town of Granite flourished in 1869 when rich silver deposits were discovered at Alta up Little Cottonwood Canyon. At the time of its greatest prosperity (from 1872 to 1874), Granite consisted of about fifty buildings, mostly stores, saloons, boarding houses and cabins. A telegraph office and two smelters, were also built. A great many of the residents of Granite were quarry men and teamsters who hauled granite blocks to Salt Lake City and ore from the mines to the smelters. After the mines closed, a new town of Granite was established a mile west of the former town in the area around 3100 East and 9800 South. The most prominent remaining landmark from the Granite Community is the "Old Church" located on the northeast corner of 3100 East and 9800 South, across from the Granite Elementary School.
