It was designed in 1868 by the firm of Ware and Van Brunt, who had just completed the design of Harvard's Memorial Hall. Walls are of granite from Rockport. The pink course is from Quincy. The stairway was salvaged from the John Hancock House in Boston. The third floor was added a decade later to accommodate an ever-expanding family. The house is situated on a high promontory at the center of the forty-acre property and looks out over Massachusetts Bay. At one end of the third-of-a-mile shoreline stands a dramatic undercut rock formation historically known as Sharksmouth. From this landmark the estate takes its name. Development of the estate also included a "cottage" (1869), a caretaker's house (1700's) moved from across the road, stable, barns, pasture, hen yard, orchards, gardens, and a network of paths and avenues tying it all together as one self-sufficient entity. Historic vacation rental property.
