This home was once called “The Old Rock School House.” It was the first school built outside the fort, built about 1863 from the rocks left from Fort Payson’s foundation. Rather than haul all of the rocks away, a plan to build the school was devised. This school was 1 of 3 used until Peteetneet School was built in 1901. The Rock School stood empty for 22 years before a carpenter named Earl McClellan bought it and converted it into a dwelling. On the north side of the house a section was left unstuccoed so you can still see the rocks from the old fort. It is the only schoolhouse of the original 3 still standing. It is also listed on Payson's historical walking tour as site 10 and a small marker was placed in the front yard. The previous owner declined adding the more traditional brick historical marker from being placed. Electrical and plumbing have been updated also the house foundation has been reinforced.
