    What's special

The Camak house was built in 1834 by noted Georgian James Camak. Mr Camak came to Athens as a professor of mathematics at the University of Georgia, having previously served as the editor of The Southern Cultivator. Mr Camak was crucial in founding one of Clarke County's first agricultural societies in 1845. He also became the president of the Georgia Railroad and Banking Co. This company was founded inside the Camak house. The brick federal style home sits proudly atop a rise and allows fantastic views of the surrounding areas including downtown and the campus of UGA. Beautiful wrought iron detailing on the porches welcome visitors to the stately home. The grand scale of the rooms in this house create a spacious feel. The large wood plank flooring is some of the oldest in Athens, cut from local trees over 180 years ago. The home boasts three stories including the basement, which was originally built to house a kitchen and slave quarters. The basement, which has a grade level entryway, still has the original brick flooring. Each room of the house has a fireplace, twelve in all. There are lovely built in bookcases and detailed carpentry throughout the home. The grand staircase on the main floor rises to the top floor, leading to four spacious rooms and one smaller front facing room. This home is zoned C-D, and has 25 governing covenants associated with the Georgia Trust, but could remain an office space or be returned to residential use. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, and one of the most historic and unique homes in the south. There is also a brick two bedroom out building with a kitchen and bath. This structure is also original to the property and served as the carriage house. It currently serves as a residential rental. The lot spans almost a whole city block, and allows for ample off street parking behind the home. There are several wonderful old trees that surround the home as well.

This property is off market, which means it's not currently listed for sale or rent on Zillow. This may be different from what's available on other websites or public sources.
