Tahoe Donner was originally developed by Jack Kirby of Dart Industries as a family resort that would have every recreational facility a family could want, all in one place. The first home was built in 1972. Prior to its development, the area operated two saw mills along Trout Creek during the late 1800s. A railroad spur also operated from Hobart Mills along Alder Creek into Tahoe Donner. Today, Tahoe Donner is a recreational homeowner community of approximately 6,500 property owners and over 30,000 members located within Truckee, California, only 5 miles from Donner Lake and 15 miles from Lake Tahoe. The association operates several recreational facilities and programs, both public and private. Public amenities include: a downhill and cross country ski area, two restaurants, a championship golf course, equestrian center and campground. Additionally, the association manages other amenities for the exclusive use of the property owners/members and their guests, including tennis courts, hiking trails, playgrounds, pools, a beach club on Donner Lake and a fitness center. Jack Kirbys original vision of Tahoe Donner included open space for homeowners to enjoy the natural beauty of the Sierra mountain environment. Tahoe Donner is comprised of approximately 6,000 acres, with over 2,000 acres of open space maintained by the association and 1,300 acres of common area interspersed among the community homes.
