The Old North Wharf, built in 1723 is one of the four historic wharves in Nantucket Harbor. 200 years ago the slips at the end of the Old North Wharf were used by Nantucket's famous whalers. The cottages on the wharf date back to 1900. They were originally fishing shacks and artist studios but most have become residential in the time since their construction. The Old North Wharf Cooperative, Inc. owns most of Old North Wharf. The Cooperative consists of eleven cottage, the famed Wharf Rat Club, and three deep-water slips, NORTH, MIDDLE and SOUTH. The Cooperative is a residential cooperative. No commercial activity is allowed and unit owners are expected to use their property for their personal use. Rentals are allowed with permission. A three person Board of Directors Runs the Cooperative's affairs and prospective new owners must be approved by this board.
